Henri sighed. He wasn’t surprised Misha wanted to know the whole story. He wished he didn’t have to tell it again so soon, but he might as well get everything out there. Besides, Misha deserved it. He’d put himself in Vlad’s path by agreeing to let Henri stay at his apartment, and even though Henri doubted Vlad would find him there, he couldn’t be a hundred percent sure.

Of course, that made him think about what would happen if Vlad did find him in Misha’s apartment.

Vlad was insanely jealous—which was one of the reasons he’d locked Henri up. He was also controlling, cruel, and ready to do anything to keep what he saw as his. If he found Henri and Misha together, he’d assume they were sleeping together, just like he’d done when Henri had seen his friends ten years ago. That would put Misha right into his path, and he wouldn’t be nice about it. He’d make sure Henri saw Misha suffer before killing him, and Henri didn’t want that to happen.

Maybe he should find another place to stay until Vlad was caught.

“Henri?”

Misha’s voice jerked Henri out of his thoughts. He cleared his throat. Misha wouldn’t let him leave if Henri suggested it now, but maybe once he knew the entire story, he’d realize it would be better.

So Henri told him. “I was vulnerable when I met Vlad. I know it doesn’t give me an excuse for what happened later, but it explains why I didn’t see who Vlad really was in the beginning. I wanted someone to love me, and he’s very skilled at acting and looking like he cares. So I believed him, and when I realized how he really was and decided to leave, it was too late.”

Henri jerked when a hand closed around his. He hadn’t seen Misha move, and he certainly hadn’t expected him to take his hand. But he did, reaching for it again and folding it into his.

Henri swallowed. He’d thought he’d cried all his tears while he’d been in the dungeon, but now his eyes prickled. He tried not to let the tears fall, but it was hard.

“Maybe you shouldn’t talk about it. You don’t owe me anything, not even an explanation,” Misha murmured, rubbing his thumb over Henri’s knuckles.

Henri wanted to take that and run with it, never talk about his time with Vlad again, but he liked Misha. He’d been yearning for this kind of contact, or relationship, for years. He wasn’t sure what he could have with Misha, but right now, he’d say yes to just about anything.

But to have that, Misha needed to know.

Henri didn’t think of himself as broken or damaged goods, not even after what Vlad had done to him. He’d had years to think about it, and he knew it was all Vlad’s fault, that it didn’t change him personally. That didn’t mean Misha wasn’t going to see things differently, though, and Henri wanted him to know what had happened, what had been done to him, before they could get deeper into whatever it was they were in.
